Decision basis for multi-directional path planning for post-processing reduction in material extrusion

Abstract Reducing support structures in Material Extrusion (ME) of Additive Manufacturing enables lowered post-processing efforts and enhanced use industrial applications. This study provides a decision basis for multi-directional path planning strategy to print parts on multi-axis printers without the structures. Research solutions different limitations ME systems are examined. The combination Flat Curved Layer Slicing, Adaptive Load-Capable Path Planning Multi-Axis Slicing printing demonstrator part. part’s build structure consists form elements (features) with varying directions depending transition areas between them. A proof-of-concept three-axis printer shows ability method systems. Interfaces features require parameter adjustment obtain desired mechanical properties. Tensile tests performed evaluate load capacity at connecting standard specimens. Geometrically complex (3D) printed conventional improved characteristics through multi-feature strategy. Each feature is according geometrically determined requirements representing successful proof-of-concept. Results show that further testing required effects resistance connection areas. Adaption needed reduce occurring defects.
